CHM2101   Inorganic Chemistry 1   (10 credits)

Year Running: 2017/2018
Credit level: F5

Description

Symmetry concepts introduced at Level 1 will be extended using group theory through the construction of molecular orbital energy level diagrams and prediction of band numbers in vibrational spectra. This module also expands on the chemistry of the s- and p-block elements, covering trends in element properties, and syntheses, structures and bonding in main group compounds, with an emphasis on metal alkyl complexes. These trends will be used to explore the structures and types of compounds formed by these elements. Finally, properties of the solid state will be discussed, covering crystal symmetry, simple structure types, defects, and conduction in solids.
